Piaget on Trial

Reconsidering construction, readiness and cognitive development when learners have continuous access to generative AI.

The provocation

What happens to theories of cognitive development when a learner can ask an AI system to explain, model or complete a task instantly? Piaget on Trial uses that question to explore the difference between receiving an explanation and constructing understanding.

Construction versus completion

A completed answer can conceal whether the learner has built the underlying schema needed to reason independently. AI therefore makes process evidence increasingly important.

Readiness and acceleration

AI may help some learners access ideas earlier through examples and rephrasing. Yet acceleration is not identical to development. Educators still need to examine whether the learner can transfer and reconstruct the idea without support.

Productive struggle

Some difficulty is educationally valuable. The task is to distinguish unnecessary friction from productive struggle and to design AI assistance that reduces the former without erasing the latter.

What remains useful

Piaget’s emphasis on active construction retains value precisely because AI can make passive receipt so easy. The theory may need reinterpretation, but the educational concern with how understanding develops remains central.
